ABOUT THE SAT
The SAT is not an intelligence test, nor is it a test you can excel at without preparation. It assesses students’ knowledge, reasoning, problem-solving skills, and foundational abilities in English and Mathematics. Success on the SAT requires a strong vocabulary, solid reading comprehension, grammar and punctuation skills, and basic math (up to Algebra 1). Scores can improve with effective test-taking strategies and familiarity with tools like the Desmos graphing calculator. Maintaining a steady and efficient pace is essential to complete all the questions.
The SAT is not an intelligence test –
doing well on the test is a SKILL.
Most schools do not prepare students to do well on the SAT
An ‘A’ on a report card does not necessarily translate into high SAT scores. High school courses are designed to prepare students for classroom tests and, in some states, for state-mandated exams. The SAT, however, does not align with the content emphasized in state tests or high school curricula.
The Importance of the SAT and PSAT
One thing that often goes unnoticed is the importance of taking the SAT or PSAT and performing well. Many parents and students think the SAT is only relevant for getting into elite colleges, or due to the rise of “test-optional” policies to believe it’s not necessary anymore.
SAT and PSAT scores are often used for placement in dual-credit courses in high school and college course placement. They’re also critical for earning merit-based scholarships, often using a sliding scale combining GPA and SAT scores to determine merit-based eligibility.
When to Start Preparing for the SAT/PAT
Sophomore Year or Summer Before Junior Year
Starting preparation during sophomore year or the summer between sophomore and junior year is ideal. This allows time to prepare for the PSAT (taken in the fall of junior year, if desired) and gradually ramp up to the SAT. Students can aim to take their first SAT in the winter or spring of junior year.
Junior Year Fall/Winter
By this point, the PSAT is behind you, and it’s time to focus entirely on the SAT. We need to start preparation immediately to ensure readiness for upcoming SAT test dates.
Junior Year Spring
If your child has taken the SAT and their scores aren’t as high as they hoped, contact me as soon as possible. We’ll start intensive preparation right away to help them improve and make up for lost time.
Summer Before Senior Year or Senior Year Fall/Winter
At this stage, time is critical. It’s a last-minute effort, but all is not lost. Contact me immediately to begin preparation—we’ll go all-in for a “Hail Mary” attempt to maximize your child’s score in the remaining time.
